JHELUM: The Khewra Salt Mine has been temporarily closed to tourists until the end of monsoon season.

According to sources, tourist entry has been halted for seasonal maintenance and upkeep.

Manager of Punjab Minerals Development Corporation at the Khewra Salt Mines in Jhelum Malik Mohammad Naeem confirmed to Dawn that “entry of visitors and tourists is closed till the end of the monsoon season”.

The officer said water level in the ponds inside the mine had surged due to heavy rains and moisture in the air. Mr Malik confirmed on query that “the mine is safe and will be reopened after the monsoon season”.

The officer requested intending visitors to wait and postpone their trips until the venue reopens after the end of the rainy spell in the region.

The Khewra Salt Mines is the second-largest reservoir of pink salt in the world and is largely visited by tourists from Pakistan as well as from around the world.
