KARACHI: The outlook of the impending peak of the monsoon flood in the mighty Indus became grim yesterday [Aug 7] as the “super flood” got to within 150 miles from Guddu last night. According to the latest official forecast, the discharge at Guddu may now be up to 11,80,000 cusecs — almost one lakh cusecs more than the record of about 10,84,000 cusecs on Aug. 19, 1973. Worse still, the high discharge was now certain to sustain long enough, while the period of high flows may extend to several days, because of the second peak of the flood which had already formed in the Upper Indus Basin and may [be] of much greater intensity than the first at Punjab.

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from Dacca,] Bangladesh Navy Chief has accused India of resorting to “evasive methods” to thwart a permanent settlement on sharing the waters of the Ganges. Rear Admiral Mosharaf Hossain Khan told a meeting in ... Faridpur that a Bangladesh request to India for monthly apportionment of Ganges water had fallen on deaf ears. He said when an Indian delegation came to Bangladesh last June the main subject of discussion was the effect on Bangladesh of the Farakka barrage which India has built to divert the Ganges during the dry season.
