SUKKUR: One of the two suspects arrested three days back in a case pertaining to alleged firing on the home of retired chief justice Agha Rafique Khan Durrani of the Federal Shariat Court and on a National Bank branch in Garhi Yasin, Shikarpur district, died in police custody on Thursday.
The Garhi Yasin police had arrested Asif Pathan and Sajid Pathan for interrogation.
Immediately after SHO Hidayatullah Nandwani informed the family of Asif Pathan that he died on Thursday, the shocked relatives of the deceased rushed to the police station and accused the SHO and his subordinates of killing him by subjecting him to torture.
Shikarpur SSP Mohammad Kaleem Malik told Dawn that he had taken notice of the custodial death and that action would be taken against those found responsible for his death. He said the post-mortem report was awaited, and added that an inquiry had already been instituted.
‘Encounter’
An exchange of fire left three suspects dead and one policeman injured near Shujrah Laro (turning) on Shikarpur-Kandhkot Indus Highway within the jurisdiction of the Napar Kot police station of Shikarpur district.
According to police, three dacoits were killed allegedly in the shootout while police van driver constable Barkat Mangnejo sustained serious injuries.
The dead were identified as Rab Nawaz Jafferi, Aziz Esso Teghani, and Zafarullah Jafferi.
