BAHAWALPUR: The Hazara Express failed to stop at the Gailiwal railway station and overshot and slammed into the dead end at the station on Tuesday.

According to Multan Railway Division spokesperson Kaleemullah, the train coming from Karachi had a stop at the Gailiwal railway station in Lodhran district. At the station, the train driver could not apply the brakes on time and the engine along with two attached passenger coaches overshot to the dead end.

All the passengers remained unhurt in the incident, he said.

The spokesperson said when the incident report was received, the Multan divisional superintendent and other railway officials concerned rushed to the scene.

An alternative locomotive was arranged so that the Hazara Express could resume its journey to Multan, while a railway crane was dispatched to the station dead end to lift the engine and its attached passenger coaches.

The spokesperson told Dawn that the engine and coaches were lifted from the site and sent to Multan. He said the cause of the incident would be ascertained after an inquiry into the incident.
