Rawalpindi/TAXILA: At least seven people drowned in separate incidents in Rawalpindi and Attock, police and rescue sources said.

In Attock, a 20-year-old woman died after a motorcycle plunged into a rainwater channel from a fence-less culvert, while three people, including two minor siblings, drowned in a village pond in separate incidents.

In the first incident, a young woman drowned and her father was injured when the motorcycle they were riding plunged into a rainwater channel from a fence-less culvert in the Ahmedabad area of Jand.

Rescue and hospital sources said Ameer Abdullah was travelling with his 20-year-old daughter when they lost control of the motorcycle while crossing the culvert and fell into the stream.

The woman drowned, while her father was rescued with injuries and shifted to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Jand.

In a separate incident, three people, including two minor siblings, drowned in a pond near the Ghazi-Barotha Canal in Sarwana village of Hazro.

According to sources, four-year-old Sher Muhammad and his 10-year-old brother, Gul Muhammad, had gone to the pond for bathing when Sher Muhammad lost control in the water.

As he cried for help, Gul Muhammad jumped in to rescue him but also drowned.

Hearing their cries, a bystander, later identified as Khan Muhammad, entered the pond to rescue the two brothers but also drowned.

Local residents later retrieved the bodies from the pond and handed them over to their families.

Police registered separate cases and launched investigations into the incidents.

Meanwhile, 11 passengers were injured when a van overturned due to overspeeding on the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway (M-1) near the Brahma Interchange.

The injured were shifted to various hospitals in the area.

Meanwhile in Rawalpindi, three minor boys, including two brothers, drowned in two incidents in the last 24 hours.

Mohammad Zahid, resident of Losar, Rawat, informed the police that his two sons, Mohammad Asim, 7, and Muneeb, aged 9, drowned while bathing in rainwater accumulated near their house.

The boys retrieved from the water and shifted to Rural Health Centre Baga Sheikhan, where they were pronounced dead.

In the second incident, Hussain Ahsan, 6, drowned in a drain near Girja Road. Rescuers launched a search operation in the drain.

A spokesman for Rescue 1122 said all available resources were being utilised to search for the child.

He said four emergency vehicles and more than 10 rescue personnel had been engaged in the operation.

Meanwhile, a motorcycle rider was killed in a collision with a water tanker on a service road near Koral Chowk, while a young man, who had been shot and injured earlier, died at the District Headquarters Hospital on Monday.
