‘Indecent note’ sparks rumpus in assembly

KARACHI, June 21: Opposition members of the Sindh Assembly on Wednesday swooped on a minority lawmaker belonging to the ruling PML when a PPP woman legislator complained that he had sent her an unsolicited note bearing “indecent remarks”.

The note was sent by Eshwar Lal to fellow legislator Shazia Marri, through a peon. As she read the note with visible distaste, she received another chit from Poonjomal Bheel, a minority member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. Incensed, she handed over both papers to the leader of opposition, Nisar Khuhro, who passed them on to other opposition members.

Reading the note, a number of opposition members charged towards Mr Lal and grabbed him by his scruff and thrashed him royally.

Mr Lal’s apologies cut no ice with the attackers, who let him go only when some treasury members came to his rescue.

Mr Lal issued a press statement later to explain that he had sent note to Ms Marri to inquire after her health because he had been informed that she had lately been unwell.
