Four file nomination papers for by-poll on Senate seat

KARACHI: Four candidates belonging to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Saturday filed nomination papers for the by-election to a Senate general seat from Sindh.

The seat has fallen vacant after the death of PPP Senator Taj Haider and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has fixed May 6 as polling day.

PPP’s Waqar Mehdi and Asif Khan, while MQM-P’s Nighat Mirza and Mujahid Rasool submitted their nomination papers at the office of the provincial election commissioner.

An ECP official told Dawn that a nomination form was collected on behalf of Naheed Wasi, widow of Taj Hiader, but she did not submit it until Saturday which was the last day of filing candidature.

April 22 will be the last date for the scrutiny of the nomination papers and a revised list of candidates will be published on April 27. The aspirants may withdraw their candidature by April 28 and the polling will be held in the Sindh Assembly on May 6.
