Domestic help dies, two hurt in gas explosion in Clifton house

KARACHI: A teenage housemaid was killed while the homeowner and a woman suffered burn injuries in a gas explosion in their kitchen in Clifton on Friday, police and rescue services officials said.

Clifton SHO Irfan Meo said that a gas leakage inside the kitchen set off an explosion when someone lit a matchstick.

Rescue-1122 spokesperson Hassaan Khan told Dawn that they responded to an emergency call and managed to control the fire. However, the whole kitchen, one room and a balcony of the house were badly damaged.

The victims were taken to the Burns Ward of the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi where doctors pronounced Kulsoom, 17, dead on arrival. Dr Sidra Ghafoor, 25, and Fayaz Mumtaz, 50, were admitted for treatment.

The area SHO said that the woman was discharged after first aid while Fayaz, the homeowner, was admitted for treatment.

Body stuffed in bag found

The body of a man was found stuffed in a suitcase in Shah Latif Town on Friday evening, police said.

Area SHO Mohammed Ameen Khoso told Dawn that the bag containing the body was recovered from a garbage dump.

The corpse was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities and identification.
