The US State Department had determined there was no evidence linking Tufts University student Rumeysa Ozturk to anti-Semitic activities or support for a “terrorist” organisation, days before masked immigration agents detained her on the street, The Washington Post reports.

According to Al Jazeera, The Post said the finding was contained in an internal memo written in March and that was described to the newspaper.

The memo said Secretary of State Marco Rubio did not have sufficient grounds for revoking Ozturk’s visa under a law that empowers him to safeguard the foreign policy interests of the country.

Ozturk, a doctoral student from Turkiye, was arrested on March 25 after she co-wrote an op-ed calling for her university to divest from Israel, Al Jazeera noted.
