The White House has backed Israel’s decision to delay releasing Palestinian detainees under the Gaza truce, citing the “barbaric treatment” of Israeli hostages by Hamas, Reuters reports.

The delay was an “appropriate response” to Hamas’s treatment of the hostages, a statement from National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes said.
