Banning content

THIS refers to the report ‘Punjab government stops release of film Javed Iqbal despite censor board approval: director’ (Dawn.Com, Jan 27) which was about the provincial government’s decision to stop the release of the film Javed Iqbal: The Untold Story of a Serial Killer.

The film is based on the life and horrific crimes by the serial killer, such as child kidnapping, abuse and murder, which sheds light on the dark aspects of society. The theme of the film is objective as it is based on an investigation into Javed Iqbal’s crimes.

It is disappointing that the Punjab government has banned the film as such themes can influence and change social mindset and can lead to a progressive change. As a society, we need to stand against such issues to build a better life.

When Pakistani audiences are good enough to watch love and romance on the screen, how come they are not adult enough to digest the serious issues? Such serious and authentic content should be made and encouraged for screening.

Our film industry is already facing a decline and the private sector is putting in a lot of effort for re-establishing the shattered infrastructure. If the government cannot help such people in the matter, it should not at least desist from putting stumbling blocks in their way.

We need to support good content to create awareness in society about social issues so that it may move towards resolving such issues rather than sweeping them under the rug.
