ABBOTTABAD: The police launched a mobile application here on Thursday to enable the residents to report violation of traffic laws.

The app named ‘I am traffic warden’ is the first of its kind in the province.

Speaker of the KP Assembly Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani was the guest of honour during the launching ceremony, where regional police officer Mirvas Niaz insisted that the initiative would help check traffic violations through ‘public participation and monitoring’.

He said regulating traffic in the district was one of the major challenges he faced after assuming the RPO’s office.

The RPO said he conceived of the mobile app to address the traffic issue and discussed it with the vice-chancellor of the Abbottabad University of Science and Technology before university teacher Hasan Jehangir and his students successfully executed it.

He said the app enabled mobile phone users to inform the police about violation of traffic laws by video or text messages.

Mr Niaz said the messages would reach the SP (traffic warden) and the DPO as well.

He said the mobile app would also be used for the issuance of driving licences.

The RPO said the police were carrying out a campaign through the information department’s FM radio station to educate people about the importance of adherence to traffic laws, while the schoolchildren were engaged to regulate traffic in Abbottabad city.
