Message on spy sent to Islamabad: Singh

NEW DELHI, Aug 27: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Saturday an ‘appropriate message’ had been sent to Islamabad about an Indian national facing execution on charges of being a spy.

“On my behalf, appropriate messages have been conveyed to Pakistan,” he told journalists on the sidelines of a book launch, when asked whether he would personally intervene.

Pakistan has accused Sarabjit Singh of being an Indian spy who carried out four bomb attacks, but his family says he is a farmer who crossed the border 15 years ago while he was drunk.

Singh’s family has urged President Pervez Musharraf to grant him clemency, and the Indian prime minister this week assured Singh’s relatives that he would himself speak to President Musharraf about the issue. —-AFP
