Smuggled cigarettes confiscated

ISLAMABAD: A fair quantity of imported/smuggled cigarettes were confiscated during a raid by teams of the Excise and Taxation Department.

Besides the teams issued notices issued to shopkeepers selling imported and local cigarettes without proper documents, officials told Dawn.

The action has been taken on the direction of director Excise and Taxation Department against the shopkeepers to implement Tobacco Vendor Act 1958, besides checking the violators of Professional Tax, the officials said, adding teams of the department inspected 29 shops in G-13 and G-15.

The officials said 25 packets of Sheesha flavour were also recovered from the shops during the raids. Notices were also issued to 17 shopkeepers for not paying Professional Tax, they added.

Another team of the department carried out inspection in different areas, including F-8 and confiscated imported/smuggled cigarettes from a store located in a shopping mall, the officials said, adding that the team visited 39 shops and notices were issued to all for not paying the professional tax.
