BAHAWALPUR: Justice Abdul Aziz of the Lahore High Court (LHC) Bahawalpur bench on a writ petition seeking recovery of a missing person belonging to Rahim Yar Khan issued notices on Wednesday to the Rahim Yar Khan district police officer (DPO), Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Rahim Yar Khan superintendent of police (SP) and the CTD Bahawalpur in-charge to appear before the LHC on Friday.
The writ petition was filed on Tuesday by Advocate Mumtaz Mustafa on behalf of Rabia Bibi, who alleged that her husband Ahmad Mustafa Kanjoo had been missing.
Besides the abovementioned policemen, the petition mentions as respondents Punjab inspector general of police (IGP), the CTD additional inspector general, Rahim Yar Khan City A Division station house officer, the federation of Pakistan through the Ministry of Interior, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) director general, the FIA Multan director and the Punjab home secretary.
Rabia submitted that Kanjoo, a spokesperson of the Seraiki National Party, was kidnapped and arrested in the early hours of Jan 7 from their house. Their house was cordoned off, trespassed and ransacked by dozens of security personnel, many of whom were clad in police and Elite Force uniforms and some in plain clothes.
The writ mentioned that the security personnel took Kanjoo along with them without any reason. She approached the relevant officials, but got no response. She prayed to the court to direct the respondents to produce her husband and disclose his whereabouts as well as the charges against him, if any.
CONDEMNATION: The Insaf Lawyers Forum at its meeting here on Wednesday condemned the Sahiwal killings.
The meeting under the chairmanship of the forum’s president, Makhdoom Kalimullah Hashmi, passed a resolution, which expressed disappointment over the police’s performance and endorsed the demand for setting up of a judicial commission to probe into the case. It also called upon the government to amend the police structure and introduce reforms.
CORRUPTION: Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Punjab Director General (DG) Hussain Asghar said on Wednesday that the authority was working in line with the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief Minister Usman Buzdar towards impartial and effective accountability of the corrupt and recovery of the government’s money from plunderers.
Talking to the media here, the DG said that his department was geared towards working according to the government’s directions to achieve the targets of recovery of the looted resources and misuse of government funds by contractors during previous years.
He expressed satisfaction over government departments’ cooperation with the ACE to achieve its targets of recovering looted money from contractors in various uplift projects.
ACCIDENT: An over-speeding tractor trolley ran over two boys, killing one of them on the spot on Bahawalpur-Bahawalnagar road near Khairpur Tamewali, about 45 kilometres from here.
According to police sources, the other boy who was severely injured was shifted to Khairpur Tamewali THQ Hospital. Inayati police claimed to have arrested the tractor driver.
Meanwhile, Musafirkhana police claimed to have recovered an unidentified body of a man from fields around Noorpur Norang village on Ahmedpur East road. A murder case was registered against unidentified persons and announcements made for the body’s identification.
