Steps to be taken for security of Pemra employees

ISLAMABAD: The offices of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, the Chief of the Army Staff, have deplored the threats hurled against the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority and assured the Pemra chief of their support in his efforts to bring the electronic media under the ambit of law.

Absar Alam, the Pemra chairman, told a conference at the authority’s headquarters on Thursday that the spokespersons for the two offices had told him that action would be taken against “elements challenging the authority’s writ”. “This is a welcome step and investigations are already underway,” Mr Alam told the meeting.

The Pemra chief had said at a press conference on Monday (May 8) that certain elements were threatening him and other employees with dire consequences if the authority “does not re-examine its attitude”.

Mr Alam had appealed to the prime minister, the Chief Justice of Pakistan and the Chief of the Army Staff to take measures for the security of Pemra employees.
