LAHORE: Construction workers on Sunday staged a protest at the Chauburji site of Orange Line project for allegedly being denied their wages by a private contractor for many days.
They raised slogans against the contractor and the company working on the project’s package-2 and demanded the government help them get their wages before Eid.
“We gathered at Chauburji and protested against the contractor Shahid who fled without paying us our wages,” Zameer Hussain, a labourer told Dawn.
He said he and others also complained to the main contractor firm, Maqbool Kolsin, but its officials did not pay heed to their request.
The protesters warned that they would continue their protest if they were not paid wages immediately. However, they dispersed after the main contractor’s officials reached the spot and made partial payments.
“We had no option but to end the protest after the company paid us wages partially, pledging to pay the remaining amount after Eid,” Hussain added.
