PESHAWAR, April 30: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal led provincial government has retained Dr Zubair as the NWFP’s private non-statutory member on the National Finance Commission (NFC), according to official sources.

The official sources told Dawn that the name of Dr Zubair had been forwarded to the finance division, Islamabad in March.

Dr Zubair had   represented the NWFP as a private non-statutory member on the NFC which got ineffective following the transfer of power to the elected government after the October last general elections.

Official sources said that provincial finance minister Siraj-ul-Haq agreed to nominate Dr Zubair on the NFC after his name was proposed by the provincial finance department.

“The provincial government agreed the finance department’s proposal to retain Dr Zubair after he effectively pleaded NWFP’s case during the days of the last military government at the platform of NFC [now abandoned],” said the official source.

They said that Sindh wanted one extra non-statutory member on the NFC asking the federal government to allow it to be represented by two non-statutory members.
