Malaria in parts of Punjab

Published April 29, 2003

LAHORE, April 28: Reports of malaria in many parts of the Punjab have been received, according to Punjab Health Director-General Dr Sabiha Khursheed.

She told this agency on Monday that malaria had broken out because of delay in spraying anti-mosquito insecticides. To control the disease, she said the health department had been training microscopists and paramedics.

When contacted, Dr Shahid Iqbal, in-charge Epidemic Control of the Metropolitan Corporation, Lahore, denied incidence of malaria in the province. However, he said some cases of the disease had been traced in other districts.

He said indoor spraying was completed according to schedule, but climatic changes and rains in various parts of Punjab had created breeding grounds for mosquitoes.—APP
