ISLAMABAD, April 26: The Ministry of Health has advised the residents of federal capital to adopt preventive measures to save themselves from SARS infection.

According to the ministry sources, a comprehensive plan has been chalked out to protect the residents from the disease.

Focal Person of Epidemic Investigation Cell Dr Athar Saeed Dil said the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) was an acute viral infection of respiratory tract, which was primarily transmitted through inhalation of aerosol or droplet infection of an affected individual.

He added that it also transmitted by direct contact through contaminated hands, surfaces and body fluids.

The symptoms, he said, initially flu-like symptoms, rapid onset of high grade fever, followed by muscle aches, headache and sore throat.

He advised the people to maintain good body immunity, eat a proper diet, exercise regularly, get adequate rest, reduce stress and avoid smoking to remain safe from SARS infection.

Dr Athar asked people that they should cover the nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing and wash hands after coughing, sneezing or wiping the nose.

He suggested to maintain good indoor ventilation, avoid shared utensils, spoons and chopsticks.

Adding, ensure soil and waste pipes function properly, and get defects repaired immediately.
