SADDA, April 25: Personnel of law-enforcement agencies came under fire when they launched an operation against poppy growers in Mosazai, an inaccessible part of Kurram Agency, here on Friday, officials said.

They said tribesmen positioned on hilltops opened fire on the Khasadar force when the government personnel started destroying the poppy crop in Mosazai area in Sadda tehsil.

Firing continued for two hours, but no casualties were reported, they said.

Later, Maliks rushed to the area and dislodged the tribesmen from their positions.

The political administration called contingents of Kurram Militia to control the situation.

Officials said Khasadar force in collaboration with local elders, had launched the drive in Delmirzai, Mandokhel, Mastokhel and Rashkhel localities.

Poppy has been cultivated on 1,500 kanals in the hilly areas of Mosazai. Authorities have already destroyed poppy crops over a large area in Mandokhel and Rashkhel.

Officials said the drive would also be launched in Parachamkani in upper parts of Kurram Agency.
