KARACHI, April 23: Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Nasser Hyatt Maggo has urged the government to allow import of used cars. He says the car assemblers’ monopoly has resulted in black marketing on account of extraordinary delay in delivery of cars.

In a statement, the KCCI chief said there was no justification of protection allowed to the local car assemblers in the shape of high import tariff on car imports since the car makers had failed to meet the local demand.

Mr Maggo urged the authorities to take notice of alleged malpractice in the booking and delivery of cars by the local assemblers. He accused the assemblers of extorting huge money from the buyers for early delivery of cars along with payment of entire cost of the cars booked.

Market sources said car assemblers had not paid any attention to the instruction of Industries Minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi who had been demanding cut in car prices for the last three months. The minister had assured in March that the assemblers would cut prices in April, but the assemblers are yet to slash prices.

Authorized dealers of Toyota, Suzuki and Honda said they did not received any intimation from the companies to reduce the prices of cars.
