KARACHI, Nov 30 The offal and waste of about 1.17 million oxen, goats, sheep and camels were lifted across the city during a City District Government Karachi operation, which concluded in the evening on Monday, the third day of Eidul Azha, CDGK officials said.

In the meantime, citizens from various towns and cantonments made more than 2,000 calls to the CDGK's complaint centre (1339) for prompt lifting of the unattended offal during the Eid days. The offal lifted was dumped into about 45 pits and trenches prepared specially for the occasion in various town limits, an official said, adding that the pit dug up in Jamshed Town had to be closed owing to some technical reasons after initial dumping.

Complaints of late lifting of offal were registered in parts of Gulistan-i-Jauhar, its adjacent cantonment areas and in the vicinity of Karachi University. The response in areas with relatively high literacy rate such as Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Gulberg, Jamshed Town and Liaquatabad was significantly good in the registration of complaints about unattended offal, said an official from the nazim secretariat, maintaining that prompt handling of complaints was made possible by effective communication between the operation monitoring cell and the inspectors in union councils, who took hardly 15 to 20 minutes in removing the offal.

City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal directed the departments concerned of the city government and all towns and union council administrations to turn the offal disposal operation into a cleanliness campaign by using the same manpower, machinery and other resources so that the unsanitary conditions caused by the slaughter of over a million of animals could be removed completely.

He said the operation for lifting offal had not been completed and it would be carried on till a thorough cleaning of the city.

The city government and the administrations of town and union councils had deployed 11,300 officers and workers with 3,750 vehicles and machines for the immediate lifting and safe disposal of offal and other waste during the Eid days. Initially those executing the operation had prepared 42 trenches at the designated dumping sites in about a dozen towns.

The city nazim during his visits to various towns expressed satisfaction over the performance of all staff and officers of the city government, towns and union council administrations involved in the operation, said a CDGK communication.

The nazim said this year offal was not dumped at the landfill sites because the city government had made an alternative arrangement for the burial of offal of all cantonments and areas controlled by other agencies.
