KARACHI, July 27 Shaukat Tarin, adviser to the prime minister on finance, is likely to be elected unopposed as senator on the technocrat's seat from Sindh after his nomination to the post was finalised at a meeting held at the Chief Minister's House on Monday.

The seat fell vacant when Senator Dr Javed Laghari, who had been elected on the Pakistan People's Party ticket in 2006, resigned from his seat on July 21. His six-year tenure was to end in 2012.

Mr Tarin's nomination papers will be filed on Tuesday at 11am with the returning officer, Sona Khan Baloch, who is the provincial election commissioner of Sindh, at the office of the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Mr Tarin's nomination came from the President of Pakistan and PPP Co-chairman, Asif Ali Zardari.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah expressed his gratitude to President Zardari for selecting an “extremely suitable technocrat” for the seat.

In his statement, the chief minister said “Mr Tarin, who is an eminent financial expert and has joined the party, has successfully implemented a balanced economic policy and is steering the country out of an international economic meltdown.”

He hoped that all opposition parties who were coalition partners in the government and had been extending cooperation at every stage would continue this spirit of understanding and cooperation on this occasion as well.

Mr Tarin's nomination was endorsed by the PPP Members of the Provincial Assembly who were present at the meeting.
