ISLAMABAD, April 21: Greater Thal Canal Project is not being constructed in violation of the 1991 Water Accord as the Indus River System Authority had already approved water allocation to the project, an informed source told Dawn.
The source said that under the water accord, the 1.9 million acres feet (MAF) of water was available as Punjab’s share under this project. The canal project was a non-perennial canal, because the allocation of 1.9 MAF was available only for the Kharif season. The source said that the project has taken into account apprehensions expressed in a resolution adopted by the Sindh Assembly.
He said that a feasibility report on the project was approved by the ECNEC on Feb 28, 2002.
About Kalabagh Dam, the source said that its feasibility was complete but the implementation will only take place after national consensus was reached.
He said that Kalabagh Dam project was included in Wapda’s Vision 2025 programme. The dam has a storage potential of 6.1 MAF with electricity generation of 3600 MW.
