KARACHI, Dec 6: Wackenhut CC caused another upset in the Zultec Ramazan Invitational cricket tournament here Thursday, beating fancied Dewan Group by 29 runs at the PCB Regional Academy ground.

Dewan were required to win this match to qualify for the semifinals in Pool B, but their unexpected defeat means that they now face a must situation in their last group match against Karachi Club.

Zultec, Paragon Construction and Baqai Dolphins have already qualified for the semifinals.

Deciding to bat first after winning the toss, Wackenhut CC were dismissed for 140 runs after 18.4 overs after being strongly placed at 75 for one, at one stage of the game. Rashid Hanif had a smooth knock of 39 from 45 deliveries with two sixes and two fours.

Irfan Ali contributed 20 runs with Hafeez (3-34), Fahim Ahmed (2-28) and M. Mansoor (2-29) bowled well for the fielding side.

Needing 141 runs for victory, Dewan lost opener Imran Khan in the very first over. However Iftikhar Ahmed (43) and Masroor (22) managed to steady the boat, but could not really force the pace against some high class bowling backed up with some excellent fielding.

Once Iftikhar, who hit three boundaries and Mansoor were separated, wickets began to fall at regular intervals to slow left arm Rashid Hanif (3-18) and off-spinner Waheed (3-19).

Dewan eventually were restricted to 111 for nine in their 20 stipulated overs.
