KARACHI: Lawyers seek protection

Published April 19, 2003

KARACHI, April 18: The People’s Lawyers Forum has urged the government to take effective steps to ensure protection to lawyers.

Condemning the murder of Ashraf Ali Rajput at the Sindh High Court, the PLF termed the incident “an open terrorism and an attack on the sanctity of the judiciary”.

The PLF also demanded of the government to pay compensation to the victim’s family and bring the culprits to the justice.

At a condolence meeting, PLF president Shahadat Awan said that the delay in the disposal of the convicts’ appeals was one of the main reasons for increasing crimes. He also demanded of the government to take effective steps on scientific lines for the security of judges, lawyers, paralegals and litigants.

The PLF chief urged the government to give priority to the trial of murder cases. He said that action be taken against those responsible for failure on part of the prosecution.

Shahadat Awan said that the acquitted people be given compensation.

LSGP CONCERNED: The Lawyers Study Group of Pakistan has expressed concern over the killing of Ashraf Rajput.

In a statement, the group said the incident was an ample proof of lawlessness in the city.

It demanded of the government to take action against the culprits and compensate the deceased’s family adequately.
