LAHORE, April 17: Prime minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has awarded cash prize of Rs 250,000 each to two national hockey players Sohail Abbas and Mohammad Shabbir for their performances in the Azlan Shah Cup tournament in Ipoh, Malaysia.

The prime minister announced cash awards during the medal giving ceremony for the Wapda’s sportspersons here at Wapda House on Thursday.

Sohail scored five goals, while Shabbir netted two, including the winner in the final against Germany. Shabbir and Sohail had also been promoted, said a top Wapda official.

The prime minister also asked Wapda to give incentives to the players who got the medals and added that he had instructed sports ministry to work for the welfare of the sportspersons.

Wapda are the champions in 14 different games and runners-up in 11. Wapda won 85 gold medals in the last National Games to finish as runners-up.

Following Wapda sportspersons were awarded medals:

Athletics (women): Saira Fazal, Gulnaz Ara, Noshi Parveen, Shabana Kouser, Razia Sultana.

Cricket: Rana Navid-ul Hasan.

Cycling: Zulifqar Ali.

Cycling (women): Rahila Bano.

Football: Mohammad Niaz.

Handball (women): Tahira Kausar.

Beach handball: Mohammad Zubair.

Karate: Farman Ahmad.

Powerlifting: Adeel Rana, Mohammad Imran Khalid.

Swimming: Faraz Samad. Women: Kiran Khan.

Volleyball (women): Zeenat Parveen.

Wrestling: Bashir Bhola Bhala.

Weightlifting: Shujauddin Malik, Hassan Aslam, Sajjad Amin Malik.

Wushu: Malik Usman.

Wushu (women): Umbrin Shahzadi.

Hockey: Mohammad Shabbir, Sohail Abbas.
