HYDERABAD, April 16: The vice chancellor, University of Sindh, Mazharul Haq Siddiqui, has called upon the research scholars to concentrate on those research projects, which may provide relief to the community and resolve people’s problems.

He was presiding over the presentation of the final PhD seminar of Prof Mohammad Yousuf Leghari of the Institute of Pharmacy on “The Role of Biochemical, Nutrition and Physical Factors on Formation of Gallstones in Lower Sindh, Pakistan” at the Centre of Excellence in Analytical Chemistry, University of Sindh, on Wednesday.

Mr Siddiqui congratulated the scholar for the excellent research work saying that it was a good effort.

He said that the research work of the scholar is related to the society and hoped that it will be beneficial to the community.

Prof Mohammad Yousuf Leghari, in his presentation, said that cholesterol gallstones, which are formed by the failure of cholesterol solubilization lead to perception or super saturation of cholesterol in bile during fasting accompanied with reduced secretion of bile acids and phospholipids as a result of which pigment stones are formed due to increased production of bilirubin by the patients of chronic haemolysis.

About 50 per cent patients with gallstones were found to be symptomatic, he said, and added that the characteristic symptoms are epigastrium pain for a duration of 2-6 hours, nausea and vomiting.
