FAISALABAD, April 29 A German expert has suggested that camel should be preserved and promoted as a future animal due to shrinking water resources which threaten drought-like conditions.
Dr. H. J. Schwartz, former professor of Livestock Ecology in the Institute of Animal Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture, Humboldt University of Berlin, was here on Wednesday to have a meeting with University of Agriculture VC Dr Iqrar Ahmed and other faculty members.
According to him, protecting camel is the need of the hour particularly in countries like Pakistan. “Pakistan has great potential to preserve and promote camels as future animal.”
He said Pakistan lacked efforts to maintain genetic material and data according to international standards. He urged the UAF scientists to maintain data in order to preserve animal resource.
Also present on the occasion, Veterinary Anatomy department chairman Anas Sarwar Qureshi said camel gene pool and gene bank had been established at the UAF in which a study of characters of various camel breeds was being carried out.
