PESHAWAR, March 7 The Amn Tehrik has demanded of President Asif Ali Zardari to immediately remove the NWFP governor for allowing Zaid Hamid, a television anchor, to deliver a lecture at Islamia College Peshawar (Chartered University) on Saturday.

It alleged that Zaid Hamid was a sympathiser of terrorists. In a statement issued here on Sunday, Amn Tehrik convener Idrees Kamal said that administration locked up those students, who opposed Mr Hamid's entry into the university, to facilitate him in delivering his controversial lecture.

The members of some pro-peace organisations had tried to stop the anchor from entering the university.

“Last week, the activists of Mr Hamid's group, Wake Up Pakistan, forced their entry into a classroom of NWFP University of Engineering and Technology and delivered a lecture in favour of terrorist organisations but the governor in his capacity as chancellor of the university didn't take any action,” he added.

He said that security agencies had already warned the administration against permitting the group to enter the university but all warnings fell on deaf ears and a clash took place.

“The student organisations have been promoting peace and fighting against terrorism and extremism in the region,” Mr Kamal claimed.

He alleged that Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani permitted Mr Hamid to deliver a lecture at the university. “The university administration was oblivious to his arrival,” he said, adding that 13 students belonging to pro-peace organisations and societies were arrested.

The arrested students including Tariq Afghan, Majid Khan, Riaz Marwat, Imtiaz Wazir, Ayaz Khan, Zohaib and Dost Mohammad were opposed to militants' agenda in the region.

The students were kept in the lockup of University police station for more than eight hours. They were released on the intervention of Amn Tehrik. —Bureau Report

JAAC ban

Though the JAAC’s demands are open to scrutiny, banning any political organisation — as long as it remains committed to peaceful activism — is undemocratic.
