GUJRANWALA, April 13: Teachers have threatened that they will go on strike if their demand about the abolition of denationalization policy is not accepted within three days.
This demand was made by teachers here on Sunday at a joint action committee meeting of the Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association (PPLA) with its coordinator Prof Mahboob Ahmad in the chair.
The teachers said the Punjab government on one side claimed eliminating illiteracy in the country while on the other continued the denationalization policy at the behest of IMF and other donor agencies.
The denationalization of educational institutions was nothing but to close the doors of education for the children of the poor. Rejecting the denationalization policy, they asked the government to abolish the anti-education policy which was causing disparity between the children of the rich and the poor.
SES teachers association district president Arif Hussain, PPLA women wing president Prof Ms Shazia and other office bearers said that another meeting would be held at Government Islamia College on Wednesday to take a future course of action if the government did not accept their demand.
HOUSING SOCIETY: The construction work of the provincial government’s employees cooperative housing society is being completed while the power supply line has been acquired from the Gakkhar grid station.
This was stated at a meeting presided over by society president and former deputy commissioner Khalid Sultan here on Sunday.
The meeting was told that about 165 acres of land had been acquired for the purpose and all hurdles in the construction of the housing colony had already been removed.
It was told that good quality carpeted roads, disposal work, a green belt, a telephone exchange, water supply scheme, sewerage, educational institutions, a mosque and a play ground were also included in the housing colony.
The meeting formed various sub-committees comprising its members to monitor the construction work.
The meeting was told that the proposal for the expansion of the colony was under-consideration so that more residential facilities could be provided to government employees.
Chief Engineer Col Zafar (retired) and other senior officers were also present on the occasion.
KILLS FRIEND: A youth killed his friend on suspicion of having relations with his sisters here on Sunday.
Majid was present in his house on Sheikhupura Road when Nadim called him out, attacked him with a knife and escaped after killing him on the spot.
Police have registered a case and are investigating.
SUICIDE: A woman committed suicide on Sunday by taking poisonous pills in Chak Ramdas.
Khurshid Bibi quarrelled with her husband Barkat Ali over monetary issue. She died on the way to the local DHQ Hospital.
