MIRPUR (AJK), April 13: Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q, disclosed here on Sunday that the Punjab government had banned surprise checking and scrutiny of passengers traveling on highways in the province.

He was addressing as chief guest at an oath-taking ceremony of the local Press Club in Mirpur on Sunday.

The ceremony was presided over by visiting member of the British House of Lords, Lord Nazir Ahmed.

Leader of Opposition in Azad Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly and former Prime Minister of AJK Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry was the guest of honour at the ceremony.

Chaudhry Shujaat said that Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had taken a serious notice of undue checking on the highways and humiliating attitude of police and customs officials with commuters and banned it to rid the people of this nuisance.

The PML-Q Chief applauded the role of journalists in highlighting these problems which the people experienced daily.

He particularly praised the role of the Kashmiri journalists for highlighting the importance of an early peaceful settlement of the Kashmir problem as the dispute was posing a great threat to peace in South Asia.—AFP
