GUJRANWALA, April 12: Some 500 telephone numbers of Gakkhar digital telephone excha-nge became silent on Saturday as underground cables were badly damaged by the National High-way and Motorway Police during the widening of the GT Road.

The NH and MP had started widening the road to three-lanes from Kharian to Lahore for the smooth traffic flow some two days ago without informing telephone exchange officials. Over and above, they also underwent levelling wagon and taxi stands and other encroachments with the help of a bulldozer along the GT Road.

A spokesman of Gakkhar telephone exchange said the damaged underground cables were being repaired by technicians.

Meanwhile, several manholes of Gakkhar municipality were also damaged during the operation.

Municipal officials expressed their reservation that the main sewer line could be damaged due to the widening of GT Road.

Residents have demanded that the telephone authority should repair the damaged cables immediately.

SHORTAGE: Curriculum activities in educational institutions could not be started as the Punjab Textbook Board has failed to supply books in the market.

Students and their parents have demanded that books from primary to Intermediate classes should be supplied to the market immediately to avoid further loss of education.

Some booksellers said here on Saturday that books for primary classes were almost available in the market. However, they said there was a shortage of books for elementary and secondary classes while the booksellers of Lahore were not providing them books in accordance with their requirement.
