Tenants stage rallies

OKARA, April 11: Tenants of 10 villages of military farms took out protest processions in their villages.

A large number of men, women and children staged protest rallies in Chaks 4/4-L, 5/4-L, 6/4-L, 7/4-L, 8/4-L, 9/4-L, 10/4-L, 11/4-L 12/4-L and 45/3-R.

The protesters chanted slogans against the illegal detention of their leaders and demanded their immediate release.

PHONE CABLE THEFT: Unidentified people stole telephone cable on Thursday night in Deepalpur tehsil as a result of which subscribers of Basirpur, Chishti Qutab and Gaman Wahgra remained cut off from the rest of the country.

The phones have not yet been restored. Basirpur police have registered a case.

POLLUTION: The tehsil council sanitary wing has started destroying the environment of 4/L canal bank near the district courts complex by dumping garbage there.

The place is being used by the residents of Mian Colony, Canal Park and the Model Co-operative Housing Society for morning walk. The surrounding areas of the canal bank have already been illegally occupied by the cattle owners who sell milk to the nearby localities. The foul smell from the animal dung has spoiled the atmosphere of the area. Moreover, milkmen contaminate the water by bathing their animals and washing their clothes in the canal. With the dumping of garbage by the sanitary staff, the stink has made it difficult to breath.

It is deplorable that the canal department did not take notice of the act of the sanitary staff.

Meanwhile, a number of residents of the nearby localities expressed concern over the negligence of the tehsil and canal department high-ups on the matter. They threatened strike if the authorities concerned did not take stock of the situation and cleaned the area.
