Rain disrupts proceedings

CHARLESTON, South Carolina, April 9: Rain postponed top seed Serena Williams’s opening match in the $1.3 million Family Circle Cup on Tuesday.

Williams, who was to have played qualifier Dally Randriantefy of Madagascar, will now have to play her second-round match on Wednesday.

Second seed Lindsay Davenport did see action, routing Czech Daja Bedanova, 6-0 6-1 to advance to the third round, but number eight seed Patty Schnyder fell to unheralded Vera Zvonareva of Russia 6-2 4-6 6-4.

Davenport kept Bedanova off balance throughout with her big serve and ground strokes.
