PESHAWAR, April 1: The Peshawar Electricity Supply Company has cut off power supply to 16 tubewells and nine departments of the city district government due to non-payment of electricity dues, officials said.

Peshawar Electricity Supply Company officials said despite constant intimations the district government had failed to pay outstanding dues, so the company had to disconnect electricity to water supply schemes, departments and some streets in the city.

The company claimed Rs147 million were outstanding against the district government. The officials said Peshawar Electricity Supply Company had suspended power supply to 16 tubewells, nine departments and five streets in the city area.

Many roads plunged into darkness after disconnection of power, while suspension of electricity to tubewells has caused water shortage in some localities.

The Peshawar Electricity Supply Company officials said recovery drive against the defaulting departments would continue till the district government clears the outstanding dues.

They said the company had set March 5 as a deadline to clear the outstanding dues.

They said Wapda had deducted Rs1.8 billion at-source from the provincial government’s share following which the finance department held back the city district government funds.
