COLOMBO, March 27: The captain and two other members of Sri Lanka’s women’s cricket team have gone missing during a stopover in London following a tour of the West Indies, news reports said on Thursday.

Sudarshini Sivanathan, the captain of the 16-member squad and all-rounders Ramani Perera and Hiroshi Abeysinghe failed to board a Colombo-found flight in London, The Island reported.

Gwen Herat, the president of Women’s Cricket Association, confirmed the three were missing and said an investigation is on.

“They have tarnished the country’s image and I would do anything to get them arrested,” Herat was quoted as saying by the English language newspaper.

“I think they had pre-planned this,” Herat said.

It was not immediately known if the three had valid visas for Britain, but The Island said they were met with at the airport by an unidentified Sri Lankan man who may have helped them to get out of the airport.

Thousands of Sri Lankans legally migrate to various countries every year, and there are often reports of Sri Lankans trying to illegally enter Western countries.

Last year six members of the Sri Lankan squad for the Asian Games in South Korea went missing.—APP/AP
