Disabled to get facilities: Musharraf

Published December 3, 2001

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2: President Gen Pervez Musharraf has said that the government would work with a commitment for the rehabilitation of disabled persons, especially to provide them health, education and employment facilities.

In his message on the International Day of Disabled Persons, falling on Monday, the president said: “I am pleased that the International Day of Disabled Persons is being observed on Dec 3 in Pakistan in accordance with the United Nations Resolution 37752 of Dec 3, 1982, on Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities.

“Persons with disabilities can make an immense contribution to the social and economic growth of the country if they are provided with enabling and supportive environment by the government and society in general.

“My government is fully committed to provide health care facilities, education, employment and rehabilitation to persons with disabilities and several cabinet decisions have been taken that will improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities.

“As computer-based communications and learning become more and more widespread, steps are being taken to ensure the accessibility of persons with disabilities in this technological revolution. However, much more needs to be done for the provision of ‘quality opportunities’ for persons with disabilities in all spheres of life.

“I take this opportunity to reaffirm the government’s resolve to build truly accessible, caring and inclusive environment for persons with disabilities and appeal to philanthropists to contribute resources and share in this imperatively needed task.”—APP
