Remission to prisoners

KARACHI, March 24: President Gen Pervez Musharraf on the advice of the prime minister and under Article 45 of the Constitution has granted special remission to prisoners in their sentences.

Remission of 90 days has been granted to the prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment, except those convicted of murder, espionage, anti-state activities, sectarianism, rape, robbery, dacoity, kidnapping/abduction and terrorist acts, an official announcement said here on Monday.

A special remission of 45 days has been given to all other convicts except the condemned prisoners and those convicted of murder, espionage, subversion, anti-state activities, terrorist act, rape, kidnapping, robbery, dacoity, and those undergoing sentence under the Foreigners Act, 1946.

The special remission will be admissible provided that the convicts have undergone 2/3rd of their substantive sentence of imprisonment.—APP
