LAHORE: MMA allowed to hold march

LAHORE, March 21: The City District Government has allowed the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) to hold its ‘million-man march’ from Nasser Bagh to Faisal Chowk, The Mall, on Sunday (tomorrow).

Senior officials said the MMA had given the administration an undertaking that the march would remain peaceful and no participant would damage any public or private property.

As the protest demonstrations on The Mall were banned, the officials said the MMA leaders had promised that they would not assemble on The Mall again after the Sunday rally.

Meanwhile, addressing a news conference, MMA leader Liaquat Baloch said the district administration had assured the alliance that it would not create any hurdle in holding the march. “People coming from other parts of the province will also reach the march venue without any disturbance,” he quoted Law Minister Raja Basharat as saying.

Mr Baloch said the MMA had almost completed arrangements to hold the march and people would come out to express their hatred against the US and its war hysteria. He appealed the people of Lahore to spare their time and participate in the march from 1pm to 5pm on Sunday. He said the MMA had also invited all political parties.

He said the march would remain peaceful because it was being organized against the ever-increasing lawlessness in the world.

Meanwhile, a handout quoted Raja Basharat as saying the government would not create any hurdle in the million-man march. He said special measures would be taken to maintain the law and order.

He said the government had withdrawn the section-144 on the request of the MMA and it expected the alliance leadership to fulfil its responsibility towards ensuring safety of life and property.
