QUIZ-O-MANIA: Better Half

Published October 4, 2008

ONE Some tempestuous relationships end in marriage, some don't. Some marriages are stormy, others staid — when the two partners live happily or, for that matter, unhappily ever after. The much-married Elizabeth Taylor didn't believe in living with one man happily or unhappily ever after. One loses count of her marriages, but one can't forget that she married a Welsh actor twice. He is dead and one doesn't speak ill of the dead, but there is no harm in recalling his name. Can you tell us who?
TWO Another person to marry his spouse twice was Pakistani film director Hasan Tariq. His first wife was a 'commoner', second a small time actress — Nighat Sultana, third was film dancer Amy Minwala, fourth — actress Rani, and the last time he tied the nuptial knot was with Amy Minwala. Maybe if he had not died so young the list of his matrimonial exploits would have been longer. Now the question, who did Rani marry a few years before she died?

THREE A man who got married to a widower didn't lead a happy life. His spouse would nag him, morning, noon and night. One day his friends saw him standing by a grave saying loudly “You shouldn't have died'. Who do you think was buried in that grave?

FOUR Second marriage is said to be the triumph of hope over experience. The country's first prime minister got married to Rana Liaquat Ali Khan. He had two sons from her and one from his first wife. Name another prime minister of this country, whose first wife led a life of anonymity but the second was by his side, when he came to the limelight.

FIVE Further back in history we hear of a queen who had two matrimonial alliances. The story, or shall we say the legend, of Cleopatra has inspired many poets, dramatists and more recently filmmakers. As per tradition, she was forced to marry her younger brother Ptolemy XIV and accept him as a co-sovereign. Then one after the other two brilliant generals appeared in her life, Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony. She was the mistress of both, but she married only one. Who?

SIX Tehmeena Khar was hardly known until she wrote a book after her husband, Mustafa Khar, reportedly jilted her. The book — My Feudal Lord, became a big seller and brought Tehmeena much recognition. It was said that the book was ghost written by a journalist. Be that as it may, she wrote her second book about a philanthropist. Can you recall his name?

SEVEN Guru Dutt married a famous singer, whose name you have to recall. Later he fell for a dusky South Indian girl, Waheeda Rahman, but she wasn't interested. She was to marry Dilip Kumar but Saira Bano appeared on the scene and the rest, including Guru Dutt's suicide and his wife's addiction to booze and subsequent death is history.

EIGHT The consummate actor Laurence Olivier and lovely Vivien Leigh jilted their spouses and went to the altar. Their marriage lasted for 20 long years — from 1940 to 1960. He was knighted in 1947. He had earlier won the Best Actor's award for his splendid performance as Hamlet in the film adaptation of Shakespearian's immortal tragedy. Which were the two performances that got Leigh the Best Actress Oscar?

NINE Melody queen Noor Jehan was married to producer-director Shaukat Husain Rizvi, who launched her career and was instrumental in her becoming a well known singing star of the forties and the fifties. But the two parted when Noor Jahan decided to marry a younger person — a handsome film actor. You have to recall his name.

TEN Nobel laureate and Booker Prize Winner V S Naipaul got married again in the '90s. She too was married earlier. She brought him good luck, a Nobel Prize and knighthood. She was a Pakistani newspaper columnist. Her name?
