THATTA, March 16: The Mirpur Sakro police have arrested Sher Mohammad Memon, former husband of Mumtaz Memon, and his relatives for torturing and disfiguring Ms Mumtaz on suspicion of adultery.

Others, who have been booked, include Gulab, Ali Bakhsh, Ramzan and Urs (all Memon by caste).

The incident had occurred in Ghulamullah town on Feb 26.

The woman was suspected of having illicit relations with a young man of the Jamari tribe.

Registration of the case is being viewed by the local people as a victory for the combined efforts of the People’s Party Parliamentarians’ MPAs Humera Alvani and Sassui Palijo, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s MPA Heer Soho and leaders of the Stop Tyranny Committee and workers of the human rights organizations.

According to the FIR lodged on behalf of the state, the persons nominated had committed gross human rights violations against Ms Mumtaz, by shaving off her hair and eyebrows, rendering her bald, torturing her and making the housewife a hostage on mere suspicion of being unfaithful to her husband.

The three women legislators from Thatta have deplored the incident, saying that Ms Mumtaz had been married against her will over 15 years ago and had to suffer a lot of humiliation at the hands of her addict husband.
