PESHAWAR Two members of an outlawed organisation were killed and five people injured in an explosion in Peshawar's suburbs on Saturday night.

Haji Mubeen Afridi and Haji Gul Afridi, both said to be members of the Khyber Agency-based Ansarul Islam militant group, were killed when the car in which they were travelling exploded.

The blast took place about 400 metres from the entrance of the Hayatabad Medical Complex, one of the three major hospitals in the provincial capital where the injured were now being treated.

'A remote-control device was used in the bombing,' said Peshawar city police chief Safwat Ghayur.

According to the bomb disposal squad, five to seven kilograms of explosive material was used in the bombing.

Mr Ghayur said at the place of occurrence that the incident might be an outcome of the Ansarul Islam's rivalry with another outlawed organisation, Lashkar-i-Islam.

He recalled that Haji Mubeen's father had been killed in a similar incident sometime ago.

The blast partially damaged nearby houses in  Phase 4 of the upscale township.

The loud explosion scared owners of nearby medical stores, prompting them to pull down shutters.
