KARACHI Unidentified assailants shot dead three young men in various parts of the violence-infested Lyari area in less than 24 hours, police said on Sunday.
The police suspected that the violent incidents were the result of an infighting within the rival gangs operating in the neighbourhood.
The first incident took place within the remit of the Kalri police station in the small hours of Sunday. The police said two armed men riding a motorbike spotted 20-year-old Bilal on Mauripur Road. 'One of the motorcyclists got off the bike and fired multiple rounds at him,' said an official at the Kalri police station. 'Bilal sustained three bullet wounds and died on the spot.'
Initial investigations suggested that Bilal was a member of one of the gangs operating in Lyari and was expelled from the area a few weeks ago, added the official.
The police registered an FIR (291/2009) under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code after the medico-legal formalities at the Civil Hospital.
The second incident occurred in Bihar Colony within the remit of the Chawkiwara police station in which 20-year-old Abdul Rahman was shot dead by unknown assailants.
The police said that he was standing at the corner of his street when four armed men riding on two motorbikes exchanged hot words with Rehman before shooting him to death.
They said that the victim sustained four bullet wounds in his chest, head and abdomen and was rushed to the Civil Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The Chawkiwara police later registered a case (FIR 305/2009) under Section 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the deceased's father, Abdul Qadir.
The third such killing took place in the Baghdadi area where a 28-year-old man was shot dead when he was on his way home.
'The victim identified as Abdul Rauf sustained a single bullet wound in his head and died on the spot,' said an official at the Civil Hospital. The Baghdadi police said that they were tracing the victim's family to register an FIR.
