WASHINGTON, March 10: The United States and Britain indicated on Monday they were willing to consider further amending the text of their second resolution on Iraq.

Officials in Washington told reporters that the Bush administration was considering suggestions to modify the resolution to add a timetable of key tests on disarmament with which Iraq must comply by a March 17 deadline.

Last week the United States, Britain and Spain had jointly tabled a resolution in the Security Council seeking approval for attacking Iraq. Later, they also set a March 17 deadline for Baghdad to comply with their demands or face a military action.

But officials in Washington indicated on Monday that the United States and its allies were ready to extend the deadline by a week or two. The offer underscores the difficulty Washington and London are facing in winning support for their resolution at the Security Council.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell said on Sunday he hoped for a vote on Tuesday and hoped that “at least nine or 10” nations would vote for the resolution.
