Workers’ peace march

Published March 4, 2003

LAHORE, March 3: The Pakistan Workers Confederation organized a peace march here on Monday in support of the worldwide efforts to resolve the US-Iraq dispute through a dialogue.

The march started from the Bakhtiar Labour Hall on Nisbet Road but the police did not allow the participants to walk to the Punjab Assembly as planned and forced them to finish it at the Montgomery Road square.

The marchers were carrying banners and placards inscribed with anti-US slogans and urging President Bush to settle differences with President Saddam through negotiations. They also chanted slogans.

Addressing the marchers, PWC leaders urged President Bush to respect the popular opinion and refrain from thrusting war on Iraq.

They said the war would not only result in loss of lives of innocent people but also result in wastage of $10 billion resources which could be utilized for the welfare of humanity.

The marchers dispersed after adopting a resolution urging Prime Minister Jamali to make efforts for preventing the impending US attack on Iraq. They also stressed the need for stopping the immoral practice of increase in petrol prices after every fortnight. They demanded increase in pay and allowances of the government employees and industrial workers to offset the resultant increase in cost of living. —Reporter
