KARACHI, March 3: Despite allocation of approximately 20 per cent of its annual budget for education, the city government’s education department has failed to achieve any positive results as a major share of the budget is being utilized on payment of liabilities, including rents of buildings and utility bills.

According to a report of the EDO (education) office, some Rs13.26 million were paid on account of rents of buildings in which educational institutes are established.

For 71 male elementary schools, housed in rental buildings, the city government paid more than Rs3.7 million, whereas over Rs9.4 million were paid on account of rents of buildings, where 53 secondary and lower secondary schools have been established.

Another Rs0.24 million were paid to owners of buildings in which 21 female elementary schools are being run.

The EDO report has suggested acquiring of land from the Board of Revenue and construction of buildings, provision of furniture and other teaching equipment to save the large portion of the budget. A summary has been moved to City Nazim Naimatullah Khan and it is expected that he would approach the provincial government to get necessary funds and land for having own buildings for such institutes.—PPI
