Regional moot put off

Published March 2, 2003

ISLAMABAD, March 1: An international conference on regional cooperation for the rehabilitation of Afghanistan scheduled for March 3-4 in Tehran has been postponed indefinitely.

A government official told Dawn that meeting was put off due to last Monday’s air crash near Karachi in which Afghan Minister for Mines and Industries Juma Muhammad Muhammadi was killed.

All the countries bordering Afghanistan were to attend the conference. A new date would be announced later, he said.

Pakistan has already converted a $100-million loan to the Afghan government announced last year into a grant for the development of war-torn country.
