GUJRANWALA, Feb 22: The residents of Sodara Town, Wazirabad, took out a procession on Saturday to protest against the arbitrary increase in the fare of public transport.

According to reports reaching here, a large number of people gathered outside the Sodara Town Union Council office. They marched till Sodara-Sialkot Road police station while chanting slogans against the transporters.

They said that the Punjab government had fixed Rs3 fare for a distance of 6 kilometres from Sodara Town to Wazirabad. But the public transport vehicle owners started charging Rs5 per passenger. They again enhanced the fare by Rs2 following increase in POL prices.

They urged the regional transport authorities and the district administration to take immediate action against the transporters.

TRADERS HELD: Over 55 traders were arrested on Saturday by the district administration teams for not displaying rate list and overcharging.

Shops in Satellite Town, Peoples Colony, Farid Town, Kutcha Fatu Mand and other parts of city were raided and Rs19,300 fine was imposed on shopkeepers for overcharging.

The teams arrested 23 shopkeepers in Baghbanpura, 15 from Wazirabad, 2 from Kamoki, 6 from city and 9 from Civil Lines and Sabzi Mandi areas.

ELECTROCUTED: A woman was electrocuted in Dhalanwali village. Iqbal Bibi was washing clothes in the machine when she received electric shock. She died on way to the DHQ Hospital.
